The Palmyra Foundation
"There is one thing that we all agree on, regardless of political conviction, and that is that children are our future. Let us make sure that every child in Jamaica can go to a good basic school where there is good furniture and adequate material and teachers, where they get a good, sound and solid education."
The Honourable Bruce Golding
"I'm glad to be able to make a difference to the children of Jamaica. Books create curiosity and inspire learning, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to help."
Bob Trotta
Founder of Resort Properties
The Palmyra Foundation is dedicated to providing the children of Jamaica with the financial support to attain a proper education, by supplying all of their required textbooks without charge.
Its core values are:
- Commitment to the school children of Jamaica
- Focus on child development through education
- Promoting community service
- Promoting a positive outlook and enhancing self esteem
Between the launch of the Palmyra Foundation and the beginning of the 07/08 school year, a total of US$4,400,000 was raised. The budget was used to supply books to all Infant Public School and Public Infant Departments in the parish of St. James.
This money helped buy 15,000 text books for 11 schools (2,000 children) - a fantastic achievement in view of the fact that the Foundation had only been in operation for less than six months. US$40,000 of the budget was personally donated by Bob Trotta, developer of The Palmyra Resort & Spa and founder of Resort Properties.
The Palmyra Foundation's first ever fundraising event took place on December 8th, 2007 at the Shoppes at Rose Hall in Montego Bay.
Sponsored by almost 100 companies and hosted by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Honourable Bruce Golding, the event raised over US$100,000 for school textbooks for the 2008 school year from the sale of tickets and donated auction items.
The Foundation's five-year goal is to distribute one million textbooks. In future years it also aims to supply uniforms, school lunches and more.
